Cruise Line Food Allergy Policies

Food allergy accommodations, epinephrine policies, and dining protocols for major cruise lines — both U.S.-based and international.

Important: This information is compiled from official cruise line websites and the FARE cruise line guide. Policies change frequently — always confirm directly with your cruise line before booking and sailing. This is not medical advice; always consult your allergist before traveling.

Essential Tips for Cruising with Food Allergies

Always carry your own epinephrine

Never rely solely on the ship's medical center. Bring at least two epinephrine auto-injectors in their original packaging, labeled with your or your child's name, in your carry-on bag — never in checked luggage.

Notify the cruise line in advance

Submit your dietary needs via the cruise line's Special Needs or accessibility form before the required deadline (ranges from 28 to 90 days depending on the line). Re-confirm with the head waiter on the first night.

Dine in the main dining room

Main dining rooms offer the best allergy accommodations across nearly all cruise lines. Buffets carry the highest cross-contamination risk and many lines do not accommodate specific allergies at buffet stations.

Meet the chef personally

On most lines, the chef will visit your table to discuss your allergies. Build a relationship early in the cruise so staff know your needs throughout your sailing.

Check your travel insurance

Food allergies are typically considered a pre-existing condition. Make sure your travel insurance policy covers pre-existing conditions and emergency medical evacuation.

Bring safe snacks

Pack allergy-safe snacks for shore excursions and port days, where safe food options may be limited. Most lines allow pre-packaged allergy-safe foods in your carry-on.
