Summary

Allows schools to maintain a stock supply of albuterol inhalers and solution and permits school nurses or designated personnel to administer it to any individual exhibiting symptoms of respiratory distress.

Full Description

Kansas is one of 24 states (including DC) that have passed laws or guidelines permitting schools to stock albuterol inhalers with a prescription and administer them to a student believed to be in respiratory distress. These laws standardize asthma action plans and improve asthma management in schools. Stock albuterol laws help save the lives of students who experience an asthma attack at school and do not have their own prescribed inhaler. The federal School-Based Allergies and Asthma Management Program Act (SAMPRO Act, 2021) encourages more schools to implement comprehensive asthma management programs.

Key Provisions

1. Permits schools to stock albuterol inhalers with prescription. 2. Allows trained personnel to administer albuterol to students in respiratory distress. 3. Standardizes asthma action plans. 4. Improves school-based asthma management.
